Our Summer Programs

For this Summer, Geronimo will have two sailing programs with up to eight students onboard.

On all of our trips, we focus on teaching sailing and navigation skills, while students are fully engaged in a unique experential program on board a 70' ocean going Sailing School Vessel. Students stand watch, navigate, perform sail maneuvers, steer, cook and clean, as they progressively take on more responsibility over the course of their voyage. Our affiliation with several major marine science research organizations create valuable and real opportunities to be involved in marine research. While on board, the participants work with an experienced team of professional sailors and teachers exploring the waters between the Canadian Maritimes and New England.

Cruise #1: Newport, Rhode Island to Maine - June 13 to July 19 - Geronimo's summer voyage of 2010 is open to students currently enrolled at St. George's. The participants will sail from Newport, RI and explore the North Western Atlantic and coastal waters. The trip will end in Maine. During the four week course on board GERONIMO, students will be taught a survey course in Oceanography which will include the following topics: Marine Biology, Marine Geology, Meteorology, Navigation and Seamanship. (Currently FULL with waiting list).

Cruise #2: Portland, Maine to Newport, Rhode Island - July 23 to August 16 - GERONIMO’S second summer voyage is open enrollment for high school students. The trip will depart from Southern Maine. The student crew will train and become familiar with the workings of a large vessel and learn how to work together as a team. During the time on board, the students will be taught a brief survey course in Oceanography which also includes Nautical Science. Topics that are covered are Ocean Currents, Marine Weather, Basic Navigation, Sail Theory as well as lectures that concentrate on the specific region we are sailing in (eg. Gulf of Maine and the current Red Tide Problems, New England Fisheries). Tuition: $2900(Currently Accepting Applications),
